Overcoming the Past and Planning for the Future
Sammi’s Story
“When I was 16, my dad passed away by suicide. I didn’t have the tools to cope with such a devastating loss, and I turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain. For years, addiction stole my stability, my confidence, and my sense of direction. What I wanted more than anything was to be the strong, present mother my kids, Brightan and Tenni deserved, but I didn’t know how to get there.
After years of struggling, I reached a breaking point. I knew I needed help if I wanted to create a different life for myself and my children. I worked hard in treatment and in recovery programs, and when I was referred to the Front Door Agency’s Transformational Housing Program in 2022, I knew it was the opportunity I had been waiting for. I filled out the paperwork in less than 24 hours because I didn’t want to waste another chance.
From the moment I arrived, I felt something I had never experienced before: unconditional support. My case managers held me accountable, and for the first time, I felt like I finally had people in my corner. That gave me hope and reminded me that I wasn’t doing this alone. The Front Door Agency stood beside me when I couldn’t stand on my own.
With safe, affordable housing, ongoing case management, and a trusted, caring team walking alongside me, I was able to focus on rebuilding my life. I reunited with my children, completed financial literacy courses, and earned my CRSW license so I could help other women and moms in recovery. I took advantage of every resource the Front Door Agency made available to me and little by little, I began to believe in myself again.
Today, my life is beautiful. I purchased my first home, I’m working full-time in the recovery field, and I’m raising my children in a safe and stable environment. I’m also on track to graduate with my degree in Business Administration next year.
Waking up in the same home as my children, Brightan and Tenni, is something I once thought I’d never have. The Front Door Agency gave me more than housing – they gave me hope, strength, and people who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Because they were in my corner, my kids finally have the mom they deserve.”
